HOW TO APPLY


The following are instructions for applying to the post graduate programs in the School of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University.

  • Complete the application form. Please type or print clearly in ink.

  • A non-refundable application fee of US$75 is required of all applicants. A personal check, money order or cashier's check for the exact amount should be made payable to the School of Architecture. International applicants should pay with a check drawn on a bank in the United States. Do not send cash or stamps.
  • Official transcripts of both undergraduate and graduate work must be provided. If you are still attending another university, an additional (final) transcript must be submitted upon completion of your work.

    If your school does not release official transcripts directly to students, obtain a copy of your transcript for mailing in this package and have your school mail the official copy directly to the School of Architecture's Graduate Programs Coordinator.
  • Statement of purpose
    On a separate sheet of paper type or print a one- or two-pages concise statement that includes the following information:
    1. A concise statement of your primary educational and research interests.
    2. An outline of your research experience and a list of any publications.
    3. A description of your background in architecture and allied fields that is particularly relevant to your objectives. Include any relevant work experience and any academic honors.

    (Please be sure your name appears on your Statement of Purpose)
  • GRE Scores
    An official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Score Report, sent from the Educational Testing Service, is required of all students. To expedite the processing of your application, please include a copy of your scores with your package. (NOTE: you must take GRE's by December so that your scores will reach us by the February 1 deadline.)

  • TOEFL Score Report
    (Foreign Students Only)-- An official TOEFL Score Report, (600 minimum) sent from the Educational Testing Service, is required of all foreign students. If you are an international student currently attending a school in the United States, either a TOEFL Score Report or the result of an English Proficiency test is acceptable. To expedite the processing of your application, please include a copy of your test scores in this package.

  • Letters of Recommendation
    Three (3) recommendation forms are required. These letters should be from professors or other individuals who are familiar with your work. At least one must be a professor at the educational institute you last attended. The letters must be sent directly to the school by the respondent.
    Do NOT include letters of recommendation in the package you are mailing to the School of Architecture.

  • Financial Aid Request Form
    Application for financial request should be completed only by students who are interested in being considered for financial support. This form is not a requirement. It should be sent along with the application material.

EXPENSES (2007-2008 ACADEMIC YEAR)

Tuition

The tuition for the graduate programs in Architecture for Fall 2007, Spring 2008, and Summer 2008 is $15,450 per semester for full time enrollment. Note that 12 month programs require 3 semesters of tuition payments.

Student Fees

There is a compulsory graduate student fee of $197 per semester, comprised of a Technology Fee ($75 per semester), Activities Fee ($86 per semester), and Port Authority Fee ($36 per semester).

Living Expenses

The estimated living expenses for the school year are about $10,000 for room and board and $2000 for travel and personal expenses. The estimated cost of books and supplies is about $900.

Health Insurance

Minimal health insurance coverage is required at a cost of $820 per year, unless a waiver is granted because you are covered under your family's health plan. Premium health insurance is suggested for international students at a cost of $2900 per year.
